The Promise:

“A theme that emerges in an improvised scene,
sometimes overtly articulated, sometimes implied,
sometimes a hunch or an atmosphere that can be felt,
that suggests or creates a potential for this scene
that we want to see explored and lived.
The challenge for the improviser is
to notice the promise as it emerges, trust it,
and then go towards it to manifest it.”

“The Promise – Searching for the Creative Moment in Theatre, Business and Life” Christopher Heimann, 2022

The notion of the ‘promise’ is a key concept in theatre improvisation: the idea that any moment we find ourselves in holds an inherent potential, to do with the people, the time, the place, and the context.

We believe that every individual, team, leader and organisation holds a promise – something they are uniquely placed to bring into the world.

How do we recognise this promise?
How can we bring it to life?
What gets in the way?

BOOST LEADERS
Leadership Development

We offer you a space to reflect on your leadership, clarify your aspirations and develop the skills to meet your promise. Whether through individual coaching or working with leadership teams, we help you identify goals and challenges, build on your and your people’s unique strengths and offer a wide range of effective tools and behaviours to boost your ability to lead and influence.

One of our focus areas is Improvisation as a key leadership skill: any strategy, the moment it is formulated, becomes a thing of the past, as last week’s plan was built on last week’s information… How can we lead confidently through the uncertainty of the constantly changing now, guided by the emerging promise of the future?

I worked with Spacecraft on developing good operating and communication principles within my leadership team. Chris worked to understand each person’s perspective, and drove us to articulating and aligning our vision for the company. His deep understanding of human psychology helped us unpick different individuals’ motivations and different approaches to the work we do. He is also very aware of social dynamics and the power of organisational culture. He helped us refine our approach to constructing a business strategy, vision and our working practices. Above the tremendous expertise that Chris offers, he is very enjoyable to work with, easily responding to our needs as a team and business. He has a sensitivity and emotional intelligence that has put everyone at ease and ready to be collaborative and productive.

Chris is right up there as one of the best among all people I have ever met. He was fantastic to work with, multi-skilled and creative with a rare ability to leverage experience & perspective to help people find “what works”. It’s amazing to work with such a person, excellent, passionate and always fun – Highly recommended.

The results I got (after the presentation coaching) were unbelievable. Not only did senior leadership (and everyone else I presented to subsequently) understand the concept immediately but I achieved complete and utter buy in. So much so that the concept took a life of it’s own. It felt like magic. You have given me a life long skill set and toolkit which has enabled me to influence change without the effort. It’s been career changing.

Wayne Mullen
Senior Director, HR Services
The Workshop – Inventors of play

I first met Chris several years ago and I remember being struck by his nurturing and non-judgmental way of working and his ability to free people up to explore and experiment safely. Chris brings his experience of performance and theatre to the workplace in a creative, intelligent and thoughtful way. His way of working with ‘what is’ is challenging, inspirational and ultimately transformational. He enables leaders to create resonance and to find voice and presence.

You ran a fun and energetic team development workshop for a group of 70. You understood the needs and goals clearly, applied your craft to them thoughtfully, and led a popular and productive session. Thanks!

Your course has made me a better person. It has helped me have more empathy. It has equipped me with the skills to always ask myself “what feeling do I want to create in the other person” as well as “what’s the main point I’d like the other person to take away?” and not to mention “What do I want to be remembered for after this talk/presentation/conversation?” I’ve used some of my learnings to coach other people in areas completely different than powerful presentations. You are a great teacher because you made a lasting impact on someone’s life.

Effective communication is crucial to success in any area of life. And yet, curiously, most people don’t formally learn how to communicate well and engage people, and how to work collaboratively with others.

Training actors at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA) in London over many years, it often struck me how useful it would be for anybody to have the opportunity to explore themselves as actors do: to find out about your own habits (cognitive, emotional, physical) and your strengths and limitations as a communicator; to connect creatively with others; and to have a safe space to experiment with new ways of being, to become more expressive, more engaging and… more yourself.

Spacecraft was set up to give you such a space. To be able to explore communication as a craft that is based on a set of skills and principles that you can learn and master. So that you develop a wider range of choices for your interactions with people – rather than being limited by communication habits you probably never chose, but absorbed unconsciously over time.

We believe that people’s potential is so much greater than their habits; and the potential of teams is so much greater than the sum of its individuals. In other words, you – and all of us – could become so much more than what we currently are. Individually and together with others.

Our programmes are like a fluid conversation: interactive, fun and memorable. We will take you and your teams on an experiential journey to stimulate you with ideas as well as emotionally and through action – while always keeping a sharp focus on your goals and why you’ve come to work with us.
